PVC Characteristics

PVC has a relatively low price yet provides outstanding rigidity, hardness, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also characterized by its low shrinkage, chemical resistance, and low thermal stability. Because of that, PVC can be easily melted during the injection molding process. During this process, we are adding additives and plasticizers to ensure PVC’s high strength and excellent fluidity.

Specifications for Injection Molding of PVC

To ensure a successful and efficient process, there specifications that should be considered before PVC is injection molded. Below are some specifications:

Temperature. The melting temperature of PVC should be around 212 up 500⁰F. Its molding temperature also ranges from 68 up to 158⁰F.

Injection: Because of its high viscosity, PVC requires higher injection pressure that typically ranges from 11,600PSI to 21,700PSI. Its injection speed should also be slow to moderate to prevent them from degradation.

Tensile Strength. The tensile strength needed for PVC injection molding should be up to 6500PSI.

Packing Pressure. PVC injection molding requires 100MPa packing pressure.

Shrinkage. The process for PVC injection molding should have low shrinkage that ranges from 0.002mm to 0.006mm.

RPM of Screw. PVC injection molding requires 35RPM to 50RPM screw rotation speed.

Pressure of Screw Back. It is recommended to use screw back pressure up to 100PSIG.

Holding Pressure. Maintaining a full PVC part in the injection molding process requires 50% holding pressure.

Machine Type. Injection molding machines such as reciprocating screw can be used to mold PVC materials.

Clamp Capacity. The clamp force of an injection molding machine should range from 1.5-2.5 tons/in2.

Machine Used for PVC Injection Molding

To achieve a successful PVC injection molding process, it is necessary to use the right machine. The ideal machine to be used for the process should have the following features:

High-Quality Systems. Machines used for PVC injection molding should have an efficient cooling fan, PVC screw barrel, multi-core pull, and more.

Clamping Force. The PVC injection molding machine should have a clamping force that ranges from 1100KN up to 6500KN.

How PVC Injection Molding is Performed?

The first step to this process is preparing the PVC in powder or pellet form. PVC powders are formed into a moldable condition through the process of melting using up to 375⁰F temperature. The decomposition of PVC problems can be prevented by using the right melting temperature.

Then, the molten PVC is injected to the two-part mold at a controlled rate and speed. Thus, preventing incomplete filling, air pockets, and other defects to occur before it solidifies.

After cooling down, the two mold cavities are separated by activating the plates or ejector pin. Thus, ejecting out the solidified PVC product.

After the PVC product is removed from the mold, it is stored in a collection bin and ready for another process including post-processing.

While PVC injection molding offers many advantages, it also has disadvantages. It includes the higher cost. Since this process needs to use custom mold with two sides, it requires a higher cost that weighed the total part run.
